4.5 Star, Used with Google Wi-Fi

I purchased this unit because I needed a "wired" connection to hook up our Google WiFi puck in our garage. The Google WiFi puck simply didn't have enough WiFi signal to pass through our aluminum siding (both on garage and house). Instead of trying to run an ethernet cord out to our garage, I purchased this powerline adapter. I was a little hesitant at first because some reviewers were under the impression the units need to be connected to the same circuit. I'm 99% sure that this is NOT the case. It would defeat the purpose of this adapter. Having said that, I plugged this unit into a non-used outlet in our basement, that happens to be six feet from our basement network switch. I then took the other unit and plugged it into an outlet in our garage. I did the pairing prior to testing, but I really don't think it was necessary. The units found each other quickly. I was rather surprised and expected the whole thing to not work. So I took my MacBook Pro with USB Ethernet adapter out to the garage. Plugged in the ethernet and...it works! With the wired connection, I achieved a 70Mbps download and 11.8 Mbps upload. We pay for 120Mbps service for reference. This is more than enough speed to stream music, youtube videos, and just browse the web. Though the ultimate test is next. Will the Google WiFi router play nice with this powerline adapter? For those unfamiliar with Google WiFi routers, they have two Ethernet ports. One to supply a hard wired internet connection (if unable to wireless mesh) and the other to supply internet via Ethernet. I plugged the Ethernet from the powerline adapter into the internet port on the Google WiFi and after a quick setup with the Google WiFi App, it works! Shocker. I quickly proceeded to do a speed test and on WiFi, we managed 58Mbps download and 12.4Mbps upload. Not too bad considering the internet signal is going from the modem to a Google WiFi router, then out to a switch, then to another switch, then to the powerline adapter, out through the main electrical wiring to the garage, and then into another Google WiFi router. I'm pleased with the purchase and ease of use. The passthrough outlet is nice. BUT...come on TP-Link. Could you have designed this unit to only use one outlet? It covers the other outlet making it unusable. Half star deduction. But that is my only gripe.

Years ago when I was renting a townhouse I bought a pair of TPLink av200 adapters (older 200Mbps adapters). Never ended up using, or even trying them. Recently I pulled these out and finally tried them - they work fine; but the throughput was basically the same as the WiFi that I already have. Primary need that I have is better connectivity for some PS4's and older laptops. WiFi has been lousy on these.

The House we are in now was not wired for ethernet. I looked into rewiring it - it was going to cost about $350 and would have meant working through the crawlspace and cutting up/patching some drywall inside. Hiring someone else to do it was going to run maybe $1200+. I picked up 3 TP link adapter kits for under $200 instead. And they have worked perfectly. (Not drilling through walls of a 2 story house: Priceless)

CON: The only real negative here has to do with the size of the TL-PA9020P and TL-PA7010P kits. They both have an electrical outlet passthrough, but they all block BOTH wall jacks. The picture online *looks* like you can use the second wall jack, but you CANNOT. The adapters are too big. They do have an electrical passthrough outlet, so, you do get ONE electrical jack to use. This seems like a silly design flaw. The NANO version of the AV1000 is smaller, takes 1 wall jack and I was able to use the second wall jack (these are smaller - the larger versions seem to get slightly better throughput though).

NOTE: These all rely on the wiring in your house. All of my adapters are on different breakers. This is said to be problematic and potentially degrade performance. I have had no issue with this - But you might. Depends on how your space is wired. Also, if you have GFI/GFCI outlets this could potentially be problematic too. These would be the outlets with TEST and RESET buttons on them if you have any. I don't have these anywhere that I need a TPLink.

Gaming on a PS4 has greatly improved since switching to this from WiFi - faster, more reliable and consistent throughput. The PA7010 adapters seem to consistently get the best throughput of any kit/model I have. But the 9020s are similar and have 2 ethernet jacks if you need them. (My Kids rage-quitting Fortnite less often: Priceless! Okay, yeah, it was me.)

My Internet SpeedTest results for reference:
(Throughput on my internet service varies a little, but these are typical results - tested a few times over the last day or so)
TL-PA9020P KIT electrical outlet passthrough / 2 ethernet
    98Mbps Down / 9Mbps Up

TL-PA7010P KIT electrical outlet passthrough / 1 ethernet
    127Mbps Down / 10Mbps Up

    TL-PA7017 KIT nano size
    94Mbps Down / 8Mbps Up

    TL-PA2010KIT / Older 200Mbps version
    54Mbps Down / 3Mbps Up

    WiFi for comparison
51Mbps Down / 3Mbps Up (partially due to an older laptop with a lousy integrated wifi adapter. A newer laptop I have typically gets 80/6)

I don't usually write reviews, but this one is a must as it really helped me set up remote play, streaming from my PC with Steam to my living room TV with Steam Link on a Raspberry Pi.

I live in a two-story house and my gaming PC is in my office on the second floor and my living room is at the opposite end of the house on the first floor, where I have a Raspberry Pi running Steam Link and connected to my router using an Ethernet cable. Prior to using this product, my only option was the use the Wifi on my PC, as I don't have Ethernet cables going anywhere in the house. Due to the distance, my PC was only able to acquire 2.4GHz Wifi signal, which is not very good for heavy streaming and low latency activities like remote gaming. Although it would work, I got very frequent pixelated images and lag spikes.

To avoid drilling holes and playing with cable running in/out of the house, I gave this product a try. Very easy to install, just plug both in their own power outlet and they will automatically sync (no need to press any buttons). TP-Link provides an app for Windows/Mac where you can see the devices and the speed between them. In my house, it is always showing a speed of around 600-700Mbps (which I think it's reasonable as the theoretical max is 1Gbps).

Ok. So before using this product, my Steam Link would perform a max of 25Mbps as per its speed test when reaching my PC. After the product installed and running, the Steam Link now performs 90Mbps at this speed test! And I think it could even go beyond as my Raspberry Pi has only a 10/100 Ethernet (theoretical max of 100Mbps).

During gameplay, I can now get 1080p streaming at 60fps with extremely rare delays, frame loss, or pixelated images. If you have a setting like mine and running cables are not an option, you might give this product I try. It worked for me.

The lights on these things are somewhat complex and it's important to read through the instructions and/or watch the videos on their website so that you can thoroughly understand what the different light combinations mean. Once you understand this, these things are absolutely terrific. We have weak wifi on one end of our house, and by using one of these on a computer, we were able to boost speed from 3 (wifi) to 75 (ethernet over PowerLine).

Now it works very well, reconnecting every time we open the computer. One thing I have found is that, if the computer is not used for several days, the pairing disconnects. But it is very easy to pair them back up again, just pressing the two pairing buttons within 2 minutes.

I'm really happy that I took the time to learn how to use these devices. It allows me to keep the wifi signal weak in our bedroom area, yet still have computers available for Zoom schooling. We have purposefully used an old wifi router in a long house, putting the wifi router on the opposite side of the house as the bedrooms. Then when there's a computer in the bedroom area, we turn off wifi to minimize the wifi exposure. I feel grateful that we can minimize wifi exposure during kid sleep, while adults have wifi access needed in late evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conexión estable y funcional
Reviewed in Mexico on December 26, 2018

4.0 out of 5 stars Para ampliar tu red y mantener buena velocidad
Reviewed in Mexico on March 6, 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately this seems to work fine with my home
Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2018
More consistent than my wifi. Fortunately this seems to work fine with my home. It's nice that it's plug and play but if you want added security you could pair them together (but keep in mind that your router already has a firewall to secure your home's internet). It's gigantic by the way. Don't rely on the pictures shown, they are misleading. The adapter takes all of the space and blocks the other plug even if you mount it on top but they added an outlet pass through which I was wishing to not because I wanted to alter as less as possible the signal. Comes with 2 ethernet cables and 1 quick installation guide that's... quick. This is really good for me since there is a lot of wifi (+bluetooth) signals all over my house interfering with one another and while my little brother lags because of his wifi signal I don't feel anything :)

1.0 out of 5 stars The speed is far from reaching claimed 1000MB
Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2021
I got the product in Nov 2021. Set it up as per instruction. The internet I signed up for is 1GB. I know that the internet is ran through the powerline and it may not be that fast. But the speed is between 7.5MB to 35MB. I tried this device at multiple locations at home. It is very slow. Then I submitted the request to refund. The seller does not want to pay for shipping. I end up paying the shipping fee of $16 for a product price of $99. Not worth it at all. Do not buy this product.
