Nice Medium Weight Iron with Great Steam

Nice Medium Weight Iron with Great Steam
When this iron arrived, I was not sure if I liked it or not as its appearance was not very exciting...just gray, dark gray, and silver. The weight was fairly good. I know that you do not want an iron to be too light, as the weight helps with pressing. However, too heavy can be taxing. This product is an average weight, which is fine for me. My main concern was how much steam it would produce. I read in the manual that you only want to use tap water in this particular iron. I always thought I was pampering my irons by putting distilled water in them even when they called for tap water. WRONG! I did my research and learned that some irons are actually designed to use only tap water and will function better and longer with tap water. Apparently, it has something to do with the iron needing the minerals from the water. This totally floored me, and I had to look up a couple other articles to verify it. Some irons work best with distilled water. Some work with a blend of distilled and tap, but some only take tap water. Learn something new every day! This iron uses tap water and comes with a little plastic pitcher for pouring the water into the iron. The iron makes a lot of steam and has all the usual heat settings. It also has buttons either to spray water or to make a burst of steam. These buttons work great. It also has the usual auto off for both standing or horizontal positions. The only feature I do not like about this iron (other than the color) is that the water reservoir in the iron is rather opaque. It is very difficult to see how much water is in the iron. If you hold the iron up to a light, you can sort of see how much water is in it. I usually just end up shaking the iron a little to hear how much water is left. This iron has a self-clean feature, which is recommended that you use once a month. It is also strongly recommended that you empty the iron after each use. I used to always leave my water in my iron in between uses. Another no-no. I highly recommend that buyers read the manual that comes with this iron. I usually just pick up a new iron and plug it in, but I learned a lot from reading this manual. It does a good job of explaining all the features. All in all, this iron came very highly recommended when I did my research before purchasing it. It was also available at a fabulous price. I guess I can live with the color based on how well the iron functions. If you are looking for a good medium-weight iron at a decent price, this one was the iron that was most highly recommended when doing my research before purchasing my new iron. I'm only giving it four stars based on the aesthetic features of the iron. It actually performs like a five-star iron.

I just received the " Maytag Speed Heat Steam Iron & Vertical Steamer with Stainless Steel Sole Plate, Self Cleaning Function " last week & all I have to say is that " I REALLY LOVE THIS IRON ", it is by far the best iron I have EVER had or owned. I read ALL the reviews on this iron, before I decided to even by this iron, but since everyone has their personally own view points on what they like or don't like about something or a product, that they buy or get, you still have to be your judge when buying a product & what works for you & your lifestyle, but like I said, I just REALLY LOVE THIS IRON & also loves the way it will just shut itself off, if left to long without using it, but as soon as you pick the iron up to use it again, the light will come on to let you know that it has turned back on & heats up REALY quickly in no time, so that you can get on with your ironing needs & the way it just glides over what you are ironing, is just amazing to me, because the iron I have now, before I bought this iron, really didn't do that or did it really iron the way I like, but that's probably because it was a " REALLY " light weight iron & you had to apply a lot of pressure on the iron when ironing, to get the results you needed, which is NOT AT ALL the case or what the " " Maytag Speed Heat Steam Iron & Vertical Steamer with Stainless Steel Sole Plate, Self Cleaning Function " does for me now. I am SO glad that I decided to purchase & get this iron, so I am a VERY happy person & love ironing now more than ever before & I also love the price of this iron as well. because with even the more high priced irons that you may get, you still might not get the results you really need out of an iron, you just pay a higher cost for them, but this iron does what I need it to do, it's a lot more heavier than the iron I had before, I love the feel of it when ironing & it's also in my favorite color, which is " BLUE ", which is ALWAYS a plus.

    *** UPDATE ***
I had an unexpected "calamity" happen. I was pulling my M400 iron out of a storage box and while trying to free it (wedged in by some other things), I accidentally grabbed the settings knob. Well, it pulled off. Now, nothing actually broke. But, it came apart in 3 pieces. There's the knob, a white plastic shaft, and a small metal pin. The knob has 4 plastic prongs on it that secure it into the body, and there's a slot in it for the shaft that requires a certain orientation. So it's possible to put back on, and I did so... but the iron wouldn't heat up properly any longer. It's that pin... and I think it's supposed to help out with the function. But there's truly no obvious place for it! A real mystery. I called up MAYTAG and their customer service (800-898-6970) was very friendly. The person told me that they've had several returns for this. No way to advise me on how to put back together. The result? They're sending me a replacement and then I have to mail the old M400 back with a pre-paid label.

So, KUDOS to Maytag Customer service, but man... a negative for the product design team. This is otherwise a terrific iron, but be VERY CAREFUL about that settings knob. If it gets pulled off, your iron won't work right any longer even if you manage to put the knob back on properly. It's that pesky critical metal pin where there's really no indication of where it goes.

There are so many cheap irons available on the market today. These appliances really haven't changed much over the past 25 years, so it's now a commodity. Thus, most brands continue to cheapen the materials and speed up the process to reduce overhead and increase profits. Then there's an abrupt jump in price when going from lower to upper tiers. Not much available in the mid range (about $50). I got this iron on sale for $35, when it's normally around $45~$50.

The fact plate is polished stainless steel, which is really the ideal surface for long term use. Those coated face plates eventually wear off and leave debris on your clothes. As long as you keep the stainless steel clean, it'll work great for the life of the iron. Feature wise it's a little above basic. There are multiple steam settings, a water sprayer, water level indicator, temperature level indicator, self-cleaning, 3-way auto shut off, and overheat warning. It's very easy to fill with water (Maytag supplies a small flask to assist with it), although the water level view is a bit subdued making it a little challenging to see in dim light. The iron heats up fairly quickly and provides ample steam. Another nice touch is that while the cord isn't retractable, it has a swivel joint (you don't often see those). The cord is heavy duty, yet the plug isn't grounded for versatility of sockets.

I haven't owned it long, but for the initial uses I have to say that I'm very satisfied. I've seen some reports of reliability complaints, but at least there is a 2 year warranty. Some people reported leaks, but I filled mine up and turned it upside down, with no leaking. Still, it is recommended to empty the reservoir between ironing sessions.

I was looking to replace a Black and Decker steam iron I had for 30 years and loved. I had no idea how challenging it would be to replace. I tried Rowenta, Sunbeam, and another Black and Decker and then found this gem. I love it!! It is just the right size and weight (others are huge, bulky, heavy), heats up quickly, produces great steam, and glides easily over different materials. The removable water compartment is so ingenious and easy to use. I actually love ironing. Only two small criticisms. It would be better for the water compartment to be clear rather than blue. It's a little hard to see the water line. And I would love for all iron manufacturers to return to a longer and less flexible cord manager. My old iron had a rubber "tube" that was about 3 inches long which kept the cord away from the ironing board and clothing. The newer irons are using a swivel mechanism that is about an inch long so the cord runs right along the ironing board and clothing.

I hate ironing. Just hate it. This little iron is just my speed. Super easy to figure out, simple dial to set temperature, great weight, amazingly quick to get to temperature, and does the trick. Only drawback is that it's corded, and the cord (like any corded iron) can be a bit annoying. All in all, a great iron. Highly recommended.

Absolutely loved the way it glides over fabric. No pressure required and it's quite light, so ironing is not an exhausting chore. One pass and the wrinkles are gone, especially if you use the steam function (turn low for delicate fabrics) It does not sputter and spit droplets like other brands I've had in the past.
The soleplate terminates in this cute needle-nose shape that is perfect when reaching under pleats and gathers if you don't want to flatten/crease them. It's also great for necklines with seams.
My one issue is that unlike my previous iron, the temperature gauge does not specify the types of fabric e.g. polyester/cotton/silk/wool, so you have to finger test whether to raise the heat (turn clockwise gradually) or lower it ((go counterclockwise) for what you're ironing. Also, if I'm ironing under overhead lighting, it's hard to clearly see the incremental posts without turning the iron sideways to catch the light.
But all things considered, I really love this iron. Wish I had known years ago that Maytag made irons.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good iron for applying veneer
Reviewed in Canada on March 5, 2021

I didn't buy this to iron clothes with, I bought it to apply wood veneer edging, in my shop!
Wood veneer edging comes with hot melt glue backing. This iron generates more than enough heat for applying veneer, and the stainless sole plate does not mark the wood.
I bought this to replace an older iron with a teflon-coated sole plate, which had worn to the point where its metal (aluminum?) was leaving dark marks on my wood. Can't have that, so it was time for a change.
This iron works well for my purposes, and no... we will not be ironing clothes with it. :-)
