    Horrible. Read Other Reviews.
Update 24 Aug 2021: We now have a Ring Doorbell 4. It has been a night and day experience. I would gladly pay the difference. If you'd like to knoW why and my opinion comparison the update is below this original review.(Original Arlo Review 20 July 2021) I had thought the Prime deal with an Echo Show would overshadow the many (many) negative reviews. I'd give it zero stars if I could. Avoid the product. I was really wrong. On opening this product it seemed easy to set up. Within days I had noticed that the image quality was extremely poor. I have Xfinity and I removed basic devices like wifi printers, coffee makers and stuff to reduce crowding on the network's bandwidth. Still, poor quality on images. Contacting customer service was unhelpful at best. All of their responses were copy/pasted and I had a new representative for each email. Some even repeated the same questions. It felt like I was being ignored. My takeaway from this product below (my notepad):✓ Easy to install. Basic parts, added wires if you do want to wire it too. Second angled plate in case your doorway needs it.✓ Simple instructions to pair and install.✓ App is required. It is an internet required device.✓ Indicates upload of 6Mbps as a minimum for the video quality. This is not adequate for 2k or the product is defective for my experience and many reviewers.✓ Adding constant current to a rechargeable lithium battery damages it and lowers the life of the battery.✓ Poor image quality. Pixelated, delayed and tearing. Images within a couple feet of camera recognizable but further away useless for personal or professional/criminal.✓ Alerts chime but opening app has a delay. Actual live feed also has a delay.✓ Advertised 2k actual < 240p observed through phone app, Chrome and Firefox browser. Can't even see chunky labels for grocery products feet away.✓ The app video was square and had a fisheye distortion. Even though the camera could capture further to the side and I could turn my phone which is wide screen to the side the app would not widen the frame of the view. I could zoom in but still the effect was distorted.✓ Reduced fisheye distortion on PC but still noticeable. Larger screen area on OC area with the same tools to zoom, record, pause and view. Similar blotchy pixelation from browser viewing.✓ Monthly/annual fee for most all basic features.✓ Extremely short clips. Catching just the tail lights of a vehicle pulling in at the edge of a frame or a person/large pet walking out of frame. Triggered fully by weather.✓ Repetitively triggered by the exact same thing. Person standing on the porch or sidewalk triggers alerts within 5-10 seconds even if silenced.✓ More often it records 10-15 minute triggered clips. Some are a bit longer but none are magical foresight ones. This can mean it will miss the most important part of the action or key parts that give information about what happened in the video. For example a car pulled up but you cannot see the people inside who got out. Not a huge deal except our area has had issues with mail theft, catalytic converter theft and other issues. Looking out for odd cars is helpful. When a neighbor asks if our camera caught something and then I look and all of the clips are of blurry people, illegible license plates, out of frame cars and people who pop in/out of frame it's just useless. Also a waste of monthly fees.✓ Manual recordings interrupted if you are signed in via app. The app notifications pop you right out of manual recordings on the PC and the same is true on the app. You can't do any actions on either at the same time even after authenticating. It's great to be extra secure but a little frustrating. I found this out while handling a support case with Arlo about the image quality.✓ Mislabeled captures. People are vehicles, vehicles are people. Many packages not recognized. A lot of people were nearly out of frame and became motion label even wearing bright plain clothes. Videos containing multiple trigger labels either don't alert or just become a plain motion. Beware for packages not alerting.✓ Poor customer service when reached. Process only delayed the return process.Update (Ring Doorbell 4) so you may compare and decide:✓ Ring is a chunky machine. Just like Arlo. It's a similar install but Ring is more of a rectangle. You can get down to finer dimensions but you either like one shape or the other. Ring does have specific safety points to pay attention to. Unlike Arlo, there is no button release for people to just press and make your security camera pointless. Ring has a hex screw that secures the battery in.✓ Swapped faceplate! Not that it matters at all but mine is purple. I must disclose that without prompting at all Ring sent us a free one just as a welcome. It's a piece of basic plastic. Make of that what you wish.✓ Battery drops out with a press button. Much nicer and safer than Arlo which you can pop the whole camera screen cover and button plate with a paperclip.✓ Both have optional wire attachment/solar which can damage/overcharge the battery pack. I hope they introduce a feature to stop charging a fully charged battery to extend the life. Not only to help customers, be convenient and all that but lithium and battery materials are finite.✓ Neighborhood Community! All communities are a game changer. I didn't have to even have my doorbell. It was on back order but I joined and was able to participate. Videos are not auto shared, you decide what videos you share with your area. Neighborhood areas are defined by users but you're not allowed to define more than a given space. Local law enforcement also decides to participate too if they want.✓ Can I preach neighborhood community again? Mine has had warnings about window peepers, break ins, car theft, property damage, acts of kindness, missing/found dogs and more. All within minutes. Yes, Nextdoor is an app but this is also helpful. With outside apps like Nextdoor or social media you have to download your content and then upload which can reduce the quality.✓ Better quality at 1080p than Arlo's promised 4k. How is that? I'm confused still. Same items on my network! I blame the coffee maker that is abused and always making coffee for people (joke). Also Ring only required me to have 1Mbps upload. I love me a tech team that can code a program to compress video. Less packet loss between customer and company servers. Yay.✓ Preroll to know what triggered. It shows as a little window within the video.✓ I dictate how long the recordings go. The algorithm also highlights the section that it thinks was motion or important.✓ Certainly not great at labels but better.✓ The UI is vastly greater. The one long video strip I can hold down and fast forward. It's so handy if I want to watch a really fast roll of all the cars at night that triggered my camera or skip the cats that visit the bird bath in the morning.✓ Same capture zone, less fish eye AND I can rotate my phone to see a larger image. I can also still pinch/zoom or swish and move about the image.✓ Very simple customization for trigger zones. Sensitivity settings are easy to understand too.✓ Again, the dashboard and app itself for ring fires a nuke at Arlo. I am very willing to hand them money and hold them accountable for their product. Their customer service was helpful. I'm sure I'll run into issues but confident they'll have fewer hurdles.

I am extremely pleased with my purchase of the Arlo Essential wired video doorbell! I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this product. Price was a factor, but quality and available features made the Arlo Essential the best choice for me. The kit includes everything you could possibly need to install your new Arlo doorbell the right way. The instructions are great also. The only thing I wish Arlo would mention is that the battery within the doorbell may need overnight to recharge in order for the light to begin working. I was a bit nervous about it, but I read many of the links on troubleshooting and discovered that others had the same issue. And to my joy I woke up to an illuminated doorbell early the next morning. The doorbell has performed excellently since installation. The video is wonderfully clear, as is the sound. I linked the Arlo to my smart hub and to my smart speakers and displays. I get a clear "there's someone at the front door" every time the button is pushed. And of course were notified on each of our smart phones when someone or something comes in view of the doorbell camera or if someone presses the doorbell button. The 180° view and package detection are two of the other cool features that made my decision to buy the Arlo Essential over the other brands. The expert reviews also state that the "bubble" effect of the camera is much less prevalent on the Arlo. I'm very pleased with the view that I'm getting from it. Most cameras and doorbells have the ability to select zones of sensitivity, as does the Arlo. You can even customize your alerts based on your preferences, which is really convenient. There's an alarm feature to deter suspicious persons, and a quick dial 911 button in the app. This app and video doorbell are packed full of great features and performance. I love my new Arlo Essential wired doorbell! Update: It’s been over 1 1/2 years since my purchase and the Arlo Essential Video Doorbell has been great! We just noticed that due to weather/Sun the black border around the faceplate has cracked and bubbled. I called Arlo Support to see if they were able to send a replacement black border, but they said that they didn’t have replacements for this type of issue. I told them that the doorbell was out of warranty and I would be willing to pay if I could get the damaged front replaced. The support individual was super nice and said he was willing to see if the support team would consider a one time courtesy replacement for my damaged doorbell, even though it was out of warranty. Arlo is awesome! They are sending a new doorbell and all I have to pay is shipping! Now……that’s great customer service!

Thought I'd post this in case it might help others with the same or similar setup. House came with a Music and Sound (M&S) 223 Music-Intercom System with front and back doorbells, front 2-way speaker, and 5 room wall speaker units (pictured). Having run low on coal to power it, we purchased an Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell AVD1001. While waiting for delivery, I removed the front door speaker unit and discovered the M&S used 14VDC to the door bell...not the expected (and now more common) 24VAC. Bummer. Two story house with door bell wiring coming from the attic, so rewiring would be complicated (and in a 130 degree space at this time of year in Houston). And, unlike converting AC to DC, DC to AC is more complicated and expensive (and no, to those who aren't aware, there's no such thing as a DC transformer).

Anyway, investigating the intercom 'Master Unit' revealed its primary power supply to be at 21.5VAC. Ah ha. Not needing the old front door speaker any more, I hijacked its wiring and spliced it into the AC power. I also left the master unit end of the door bell button wiring intact. So now there was AC present at the door, and the existing chime wiring, which had been connected to the door speaker button, was also available. There isn't a separate chime box on typical vintage intercom units, and it's my understanding that they (and older NuTone's?) don't close a button circuit per se. The voltage drop caused by pressing the button is actually sensed and it 'rings' because of that trigger. Hence no reason for a 'standard' button voltage. I specified "3 screw" & "mechanical" when the Arlo setup asked what type of chime I had.

Now for an actual circuit addition: a 24VAC SPST (single pole single throw) relay which I mounted at the door cavity rather than in the intercom unit box (pictured) but all of the following could be done at the intercom end. One side (either) of the door's ex-speaker/now-AC wire goes straight to the Arlo. The other goes to either coil connection on the relay. The Arlo's other voltage-in connection comes from the remaining relay coil contact. The 'power kit' is also wired across the coil with its switch in the "O" position. Again - no polarity involved. The door bell button's wiring is then connected to the relay's two NO (normally open) switch contacts, either lead to either contact. Makes no difference. The relay I happened to use was an American Zettler AZ2280-1A-24AF chosen for its small size, but any device with compatible coil voltage requirements would work. Its contacts are labeled COM & NO, and the coil isn't marked. Pinout diagram is available on Amazon listing.

When the button on the Arlo is pressed, the relay is energized and contact is made between the original door bell button's wiring, ringing the intercom 'chime'. Oh, and I had to grind down the lower mounting screw head which prevented the doorbell from snapping into the frame. Pretty lame considering everything else seemed well thought out. No problems with setup except for the unnecessary, beyond annoying, insecure two-factor authentication band wagon Arlo appears to have jumped onto. No opt-out available, apparently.

Hope this helps someone with their 'vintage' installation. It works fine so far.

Works as it should. I didn’t have a doorbell before so I started from scratch and had to install a transformer.

It comes with a flat mount and angle mount.
Come with Ray instructions and also a QR code you can scan with your phone directing you to a YouTube video of all the different ways to install.

The night vision is very good.

Your phone rings and you answer (you can set to mute on answer or unmute on answer), you can pick watch the video and select a responds that’s preset “hello, please leave package at door” and other reply’s.

Note that my front door is about 30ft from my modem and 2walls so the wifi connection must be pretty good.

I had bought the wired one (AVD1001) first since I had a working doorbell but the voltage in my transformer was not sufficient. Rather than finding, buying, and installing a new transformer, I bought this model. It works like a charm! It even charges the battery with my low (8V) doorbell transformer. No need to ever take it off and charge it which is WONDERFUL! Integrates easliy with Alexa and with my arlo base. Announces on my Alexa speakers that someone is at the door and I also get a a call on my phone.

I struggled to install it for a month and I even contacted their Help centre - I still couldn’t install it. I did everything including separating my WiFi and installing new router. It is now money down the drain. Don’t buy it.
