If the hammer of Thor was an ice cream scoop...

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2011Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseThis scoop replaced a Zyliss Metal Ice-Cream Scoop which we'd had for years. I retired it after finding metal flakes from the scoop in my bowl of ice cream. For a replacement scoop I had two few criteria:
- Stainless steel scoop - didn't want more metal flakes
- No mechanical gimmicks like a button or lever to push to eject the ice cream
I did consider the Zyliss again briefly, because it is a good scoop, but recent reviews indicate the metal is flaking off a lot faster than it used to. Our scoop was fine for years before we noticed pitting and bubbling of the metal coating.
I usually don't consider OXO products because I've had a few and I don't like the handle with the soft rubber sides, like on this ice cream scoop: Oxo Steel Ice Cream Scoop.
This scoop is the best scoop I've used. The scoop portion is stainless steel and it has a great shape to it. The tip is pointed which makes it easy to get the scoop moving in very hard or dense ice cream. We sometimes buy Costco's super premium vanilla ice cream which is very dense - it's pretty easy to scoop with this scoop.
The ice cream curls up with this product as you scoop it. That was one complaint I had against the Zyliss scoop - the ice cream would overrun the scoop and get on my hand. This scoop is dishwasher safe, too, and so far so good, it's holding up so far to nightly trips through the dishwasher.
You've probably looked at a lot of ice cream scoops...I know I did. I even read America's Test Kitchen's review of ice cream scoops. They favored the Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop followed by the Zeroll Original 2-Ounce Zeroll Aluminum Scoop. I didn't get the first one because it sounds like (from reviews) the quality has gone down since the manufacturing moved from Germany to China, and I didn't buy the 2nd one because it's not dishwasher safe (yeah, I'm lazy like that). This scoop is also made in China but it appears very well made and I expect it to hold up for years.
Trust me, this is the ice cream scoop to buy. No gimmicks, just a good, solid, stainless steel ice cream scoop. Stop spending so much time looking at scoops and just get this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2017Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseWhen I first started shopping for a new ice cream scoop, I was set on getting the mechanically operated kind. I wanted one that helped to sweep the ice cream out of the scoop by pushing a lever on the side of the scoop...this is what I had been accustomed to growing up, but all the reviews I read about those scoops seemed to point towards failure of the mechanism within weeks or a few months after purchase.
After reading the reviews on this scoop, I was skeptical (even though they were mostly good reviews). Our freezer keeps our ice cream concrete hard. Consequently I was constantly bending even the most heavy duty tablespoons trying to scoop the ice cream out. I decided to give this scoop a try.
When the scoop arrived the very first thing I noticed was how heavy it was...much, much heavier than any spoon I had in my utensils drawer. I liked the feel of the hand grip and the shape of the stainless scoop as well. I was eager to give it a try.
I did not let the scoop sit in a cup of warm water, I just used it dry. To my surprise this scoop dug right into my rock hard ice cream with minimal effort. As I drew back on the scoop the ice cream rolled into a nice round shape (great for cones). I managed to get three full scoops out before it started to become somewhat difficult. I grabbed a coffee cup and filled it with regular tap water (not even warm!). After swishing it around inside the cup I was able to go back to scooping, and found it even easier! NO HOT WATER!
I highly recommend this scoop. You'll be impressed with it's sturdy build and ease of use. Very high quality in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2016Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseWe've been in the nasty habit of buying buckets of the cheaper ice cream from the grocery store. It's cheaper, it's quick, and truth to be told, we're not that picky. We had a few months of cookies & cream, chocolate chips, chocolate, etc and we finally worked our way to Sherbet. Jesus christ, it was like chipping at bricks when using a regular spoon. I ran the spoon under warm water, and I even microwaved the gigantic bucket of ice cream to no avail. We eventually got enough for a few bowls of ice cream, and we called it night. I didn't enjoy being defeated by this inanimate object, so I decided to buy a ice cream scooper.
I was not disappointed. This thing is sturdy, and cuts through even that indestructible Sherbet. The ease at which it works is beautiful. I love it. This thing is very heavy duty so it doesn't slip in your hand. It rolls the ice cream in perfect balls. It's easy to clean, and after 3-4 months of regular usage, it still looks brand new. I was so happy with the brand OXO that I actually opted to get some of their other items for the kitchen and I have not been disappointed yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ice cream scoop in the world
Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseIn my opinion this has got to be the best ice cream scoop on the market. This is an extremely sturdy solid stainless steel item (i.e. dishwasher safe), there's no way any human on the planet could bend it trying to scoop out hard ice cream. Not to be confused with a similar model which has a "pop-out button", which I think has some parts made of aluminium, and is therefore not dishwasher safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars OXO : SUMO : ZYLISS : GOOD COOK
Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseThe blue rubber handle on my SUMO ice cream scoop ( a gift ) was fading badly from being in the dishwasher so many times. I decided to try this OXO stainless steel ice cream scoop as its replacement. I also own two other ice cream scoops and all are excellent with different limitations and abilities.
This OXO stainless steel scoop is identical to the SUMO stainless steel scoop with a black coloured handle being the only difference. Both the OXO and SUMO are hefty solid stainless steel scoops and the weight is right were you see the name OXO on the grip ( about centre ). Both these scoops will chisel and gouge sufficient size pieces out of any frozen solid ice cream. Unfortunately though, neither the OXO or the SUMO form a nice looking round ball from frozen solid ice cream to make that perfect looking ice cream cone.
My Zyliss scoop will form a better ball of ice cream from frozen hard ice cream, but the ball is not perfect but far better than what the OXO and SUMO produces. The Zyliss scoop has a very unique head design and feels more balanced than the OXO and SUMO. Its heavy and the weight is mostly in the head where it should be. The Zyliss head design has more leverage than the OXO and SUMO.
The Good Cook Smart Scoop will gouge out a large portion chunk / glob with a rounded part attached regardless of how hard the ice cream is. It will make a perfect ball of ice cream but only if the ice cream is a little softer than a solid frozen state. It’s mechanically spring loaded to open on its own once you release / relax the tension on the two handles. So when your scooping ice cream you must squeeze the two handles together. It doesn't take all that much to squeeze the handles together but to those with hand or grip disabilities this may be challenging. The Zyliss and the OXO / SUMO and the Good Cook ice cream scoops all requires the same amount of wrist and forearm strength to use and it takes a little more than what you initially anticipate when the ice cream is frozen solid.
When you go to an ice cream parlour all the ice cream being served is actually in a controlled display freezer with the temperature set for maximum scooping ability and thats how they get such nice looking scoops of ice cream for the cones. All 4 of these scoops would form a beautiful round scoops of ice cream to perfection if the ice cream that we use at home was slightly softer like the ice cream parlours ice cream really is. In fact every ice cream scoop in the world would likely do the job except for one tiny little factor > THE ICE CREAM WE ALL USE AT HOME COMES STRAIGHT FROM THE FREEZER AND IS ALWAYS IN A FROZEN SOLID STATE. That changes everything when it comes to choosing a quality ice cream scoops for home use. The plastic scoops snap and break and any light metal scoops bend etc etc etc. These four scoops are all up to the task involved and all are excellent ice cream scoops.
I also use my Good Cook Smart Scoop to form 3 Tablespoon scoops of cold cookie dough. The cookies are large 3.5 inch diameter x 1/4 to 3/8th inches thick pending on how much I initially flatten them with a fork. This 3.5 inch size produces cookies that are always moist and are the size of cookies you get at most bakeries. Just flatten the scooped cold dough down with a fork dipped in water first and then into white sugar. Try to get them al the same thickness about 3/8th inches thick. I tried the normal ice cream scoops and cookie scoops with those squeeze levers for handles and everyone of them broke with in a few minutes of use. This scoop is solid and will never break and the other three scoops are useless for this baking task. I lightly oil the inside of the scoop with vegetable oil before forming each cookie and I always pack the cold dough in there hard and it still release the dough perfectly every time.
The OXO and SUMO scoops are dishwasher safe but the handle colour will fade after a couple of times in the dishwasher. The Good Cook Smart Scoop and the Zyliss scoop CAN NOT go in the dishwasher because both have a non stick coating that will eventually start to peel or flake making them unsafe to use.
So that’s the scoop on four really great ice cream scoops. Two are dishwasher safe and two will form nicer round scoops. Any one of these four ice cream scoops will do a great job and you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cuillère à glace
Item Package Quantity: 1Verified PurchaseBonjour,
