Refurbished - This appears to be official Amazon refurbished, not a third party refurbish. That means it looks and function's like new with the official accessories that come with a new device. If the box didn't say refurbished, I wouldn't have known! Pros 1.) Price - If you catch this on sale, it's less expensive than a 7 Inch fire! Not on sale, it's less expensive than most generic tablets. Price is wonderful 2.) Screen - Bright and Vibrant! Great for media and movies. 3.) Easy setup - Was up and running in under 5 minutes, that includes the updates! Like previous fire tablets, setup was a breeze! 4.) Great for Amazon content! 5.) Durable - Yes it's made of plastic but that's also what makes it so durable! The thin aluminum of iPads bends. The glass back on other tablets break. And so on! I've never broke a fire tablet and I've had plenty! I'm hard on them and beat them up, but don't break. I replace when they get pretty beat up because they are so inexpensive 6.) Works well with Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, HBO and plenty of other media apps 7.) Great for reading magazines! 8.) Good battery life! Cons 1.) Sluggish - These have always been a little sluggish but keep in mind their price. Yes, I'd love to replace my old HDX tablet, but I don't see that happening.. Amazon has found a sweet spot with these inexpensive tablets Tips 1.) Google Play - While Google Play store isn't installed, it can be.. even better, there are other third party app stores that install even easier. No rooting or advanced setup required! One example of a third lartyt store is apkpure. Works great! 2.) Ads can be turned off for a small fee. They however don't bother me Overall - very happy with this tablet and no regrets buying it refurbished! It works well and is essentially brand new!

This is my second refurbished Fire tablet as the first one was lost for awhile. It has been so essential to me that I couldn't wait until the first one turned up so I bought another. It's impossible to tell the difference between a refurbished Kindle and a new one. Since I'm an avid reader it's also been my go-to while I'm waiting, in doctors' offices, in lube at the store, when waiting for a friend, etc. The is plenty of memory to download several books, as well as samples of books in order to decide whether I'll be interested, keeps the operating system working smoothly, contains lots of apps (guitar tuner, learning bass lines, dictionaries, lyric helps, study helps (Greek, Hebrew, Bible Commentaries), and there's still room to download a few Amazon Prime videos at one time so that, if the Wifi in my neighborhood is slow due to a storm, I don't have to have a show interrupted because it's buffering. I just delete them when I'm done and have room to download more. I also have Netflix and a few others downloaded in case nothing on Prime appeals to me. This really is a full, portable entertainment center that I reach for any- and every time, day or night. It's 100% reliable. It never doesn't work. It doesn't matter whether I feel like reading, studying, watching a movie, or listening to music. Anything that can possibly interest and entertain me is literally right at my fingertips - - or if my hands are busy, Alexa is always available to help. The screen is large enough to read from and watch movies on. Any kind of tweak I can think of, like no blue screen after dark, is programmable.

Some of the really cool features this piece of hardware comes standard with are the ability to highlight in four different colors, word or phrase lookup by highlighting, and note taking. The on-screen keyboard is large enough either to "pick-and-peck" type with two fingers or slide, in which you use one finger held down to slide from letter to letter to form the words you want to type. I have a notebook app on it also, which I can use to take notes on during a lecture or meeting.

Also, now that I've found my first Kindle I have twice the amount of memory for downloading books and movies.

I also enjoy taking photographs. Since my pro-level camera is obsolete 15 years after purchase I can snap a shot of a great sunset, interesting clouds formation, or beautiful landscape to paint from. Admittedly, even though it has enough pixels to take good photos, the hardware is not sufficient. This is the only drawback of this entire system. However, I have access to fast more than what I bargained for when I made my first purchase so I have no complaints. Until I replace my camera, my phone is sufficient for taking photos. It is, however, too small to draw from so, once again, it's my Kindle to the rescue because I can use it to go online and access my photo library with a screen plenty big enough to see every detail I could ever want to for reference.

This FIRE really does have it all. There is no end to the things I can use this device for. If I chose to edit my photographs on it all I would need to do is download the appropriate app. The same goes for music writing. I have actually downloaded music studio-type apps as well as a couple of Thesauruses and some lyric helper apps. The benefits of this inexpensive (under $100), easy-to-carry tablet are truly endless.

I will never again in my life be without my Kindle!

I have been an Android tablet devotee since Android tablets were introduced. I mostly use my tablet to read ebooks. The reason I never went with a Kindle tablet was the reading app I used to borrow ebooks from my library (OverDrive Media) did not support Kindle.
OverDrive released a Kindle version about a year ago, so when it was time to replace my umpteenth Android tablet, I got the Kindle Fire 8. Boy am I glad I did! It's a bigger screen than 7" tablets, which is good for reading, without feeling too awkward, clumsy or heavy in my hands like a larger tablet does. I have a nerve disease which affects my fine motor skills & am constantly dropping larger units, so this is important to me. I did invest in a good impact protection case with a hand strap & neck lanyard, as well as tempered glass screen protectors, so hopefully this one will be around for a long time!
The HD screen is crazy vibrant...great for screening movies. The battery life is so much better than what I'm used to with Android. I read constantly, so not having to put the tablet down to charge it all the time or charge it while I'm using it is a huge deal for me. It DOES charge a bit slower than most of the Android tablets I've had in the past, but the extra life I get more than makes up for that.
My nerve disease causes me to fumble & drop things or they just slip right thru my fingers. This tablet has a substantial feel to it, so hopefully, it will last longer than all its Android predecessors.
The App store has pretty much what Google Play does, so finding my favorite apps hasn't been a problem. If there was one drawback, I would have to say the operating system & installed browser are different than what I am used to with Android, but that's just a matter of getting used to them. I learned Android...I can learn this.
I buy a lot from Amazon, but I have to say that my Kindle Fire is hands down the best thing I have ever purchased.
UPDATE 1/12/2020: OK, so the love affair with my Kindle more or less continues, HOWEVER, the honeymoon may be coming to an end. I have 2 issues that have come up that I cannot find resolutions for.
#1. It appears that there is NO option to change the background image/wallpaper on my tablet & you are either forced to live with the few UGLY preloaded images or use your own photos. I have always used wallpaper apps because I like pretty floral background images. When I search for apps on Amazon, Amazon gives you the option to search by device name and release. When I search for Kindle Fire 8, 2018 version, several disappear in the search results, but they say that they are only downloadable on Android devices. Have tried a few, but no way I have found to set them as my background image. I can take a photo with the tablet camera & use that, but I want colorful flowers (I am SUCH a girl, lol). At the very least, Amazon could preload some better photos...ugh.
#2. I use my tablet mostly for reading. I am disabled & housebound, so I read a lot & use Overdrive Media to be able to check out books from my local library. I avoided switching to a Kindle tablet for years because Overdrive did not support Kindle until about a year ago. It DOES support it, but the U/I is not terribly friendly. Things that took 1 simple step in Android (ePub book files) now take at least 2 or 3 steps, if that function is supported to begin with. Not a deal breaker, but frustrating to say the least. If you are an experienced ePub Overdrive user, don't expect the Kindle version to be as easy to use, because it isn't. Oh well, I suppose the Kindle version will become easier the more I use it...after all, I was not proficient in the ePub version from the get go, either.
All in all, I am still thrilled with my Kindle. The issues I mentioned above are not serious enough to make me go back to an Android tablet...the good still by far outweighs the bad. If I had to assign star values, I would say my Kindle still comes in at a solid 4.75 stars. Thanks, Amazon!

This is a very nice device, with excellent display clarity. It is easy to read. For me it is awkward to type on; I have to backspace often to correct accidental wrong-key and double-key presses, but maybe I will get better at it as time passes. Scrolling webpage is the most difficult aspect, as it wants to interpret my initial touch as being a "click" if/when I have touched near a clickable link or object on the page.
The "blue light" feature is great, except when watching a video; it really alters the color of a video way too much. Other than that, it's a very good idea, as "blue light" emissions are proven to be a health risk.
One disappointment (for me) is that no manual or instructions come with the device. When I first powered it on, it would not connect to my router because, for security, I enabled the MAC-address feature in the router. I tried and tried to find the MAC address of the device, but could not. Fortunately, Amazon's tech support staff is excellent, and they quickly were able to look up the MAC address and tell me. Once entered into the router table, the Fire connected and is working well.
I would have knocked off 1 star in my review for lack of a user manual w/tech specs, but major Kudos to Amazon's tech support staff. I have had many questions; "How do I ____", etc., and each time they quickly resolved my questions. Amazon's tech support is the pinnacle of excellence, especially when compared to other companies.
I should also mention that I purchased a refurbished model (Fire HD 8 32GB), and it looks like a NEW device; zero blemishes, zero malfunctions (so far). I'm very glad I decided on an Amazon Fire rather than the other tablets I was considering.
