I've integrated my smart outlets with HomeAssitant so I can toggle the switches w/o needing my phone to control the outlet. Also allows for 100% offline mode of controlling the switches.
I've tried to stick with one or two brands to reduce the amount of RAM the apps take up on my Samsung Tablet and the ease of setup and control. I use several Amazon Echo Dots for voice control and I have a few TP-Link switches and a TP-Link camera watching my front door and one at my Mother's watching over her. I also use a Harmony Hub system and Phillips Hue lighting. The TP-Link Switches control lights that can't use Hue bulbs and some cheap rope lights.
These devices seem like such a small convenience at first and maybe even annoying depending on your setup, but they have had a significant impact on my daily routine. When my alarm goes off in the morning, my lights have already automatically turned on and the fan I use for white noise (too many sudden noises around my house to sleep otherwise) has turned off. This means that (unless I stayed up way too late), I've started naturally waking up (if I'm not up fully already) by the time the alarm goes off, meaning I can just get out of bed and start getting ready. I then get ready and leave for work, and as I pull out of the driveway, my lights turn off. That routine used to look like this: My first alarm goes off. It's dark and the fan is on. I turn it off. My next alarm goes off. I turn it off, etc, etc. Finally my 4th or 5th alarm goes off and I wake up. Then because the fan is still on, I don't want to remove my blanket, so I stay there in bed going on Twitter on my phone or something. Sometimes I might even fall asleep while doing this and wake up at the last minute to get ready. When I finally do get out of bed, I across the room to turn off the fan, turn on the lights, and start getting ready, and 9/10 times, I then forget to turn off the lights before leaving.
At night, the fan comes on at 10 to remind me to go to bed, and when I'm ready to go to sleep, I use either my Echo Dot or my iPhone (I have a Siri shortcut set to turn on and off my lights) to turn off the lights without getting out of bed and waking myself back up. The additional and better sleep I've gotten, along with the decreased cortisol levels in the morning from waking up naturally to the lights turning on instead of the alarm going off have had rippling effects that drastically have decreased my stress levels during the day.
I'm not saying these kinds of effects will happen for everyone (I'm sure everyone doesn't have as messed up of a sleeping/waking up routine as I did), but home automation can drastically alter your life in ways you didn't forsee.
Also, pro tip: Don't set your lights to turn off automatically at night, because it's terrifying when you're up late and suddenly *click*. Now you're in complete darkness and it takes a second for your brain to reason out what's happened.
The Smart Plugs Mini are small enough to let plugged in all the time. They don't block access to other outlets on a power strip or outlet. Just set the plug to ON when you get home to disable the timer function. It can be set to come on at dusk or go off at dawn automatically based upon the times for sunset and sunrise where you live. When I go away I use the vacation setting (to go on and off at random) between dusk and the time we would normally be going to bed. Just like the manual timers, you can set up multiple schedules for the same day. For each schedule you specify the days of the week that it applies to, and have the same or different schedules for different days.
The mini smart plugs are about the same price as a manual timer. Another advantage is that they have 3 prong plugs. Manual times do not typically have three prong plugs unless they are designed for use outdoors, in which case they are much larger and block multiple plugs in an outlet or power strip.
