- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2018Needed to get a battery charger and saw the reviews so thought I had a great deal. Really liked the speed with which it charged my batteries (AA's and AAA's), and the level indicator made it simple to know when they were powered up 100%.
But. then it just died on me. Had it less than 90 days. I tend to not write my reviews for 3/4 months at least. There's a reason for that: quality is judged over a period of time with normal usage, and you can't get that sense for the product when you take it out of the box. This charger is a great case-in-point. It looked and seemed well made, did everything it was supposed to do - and did it well until it didn't. And it was a lucky thing, actually, as I had fully intended to finish swapping out all batteries in my home with EBL rechargeable batteries (since I had been so pleased with this charger) with my next paycheck.
Here's the thing though. EBL saw my review here, and contacted me. And this is why I now don't hesitate to make this edit to my previously one star and a review intended to dissuade others from buying the product, and do an about face here. It's all about customer service yada yada yada sure, but it's much more about a firm taking pride in something they make. So much so that they replaced my charger and asked me to return the defective one postage paid, so they could learn and do even better. When a company has that much interest in the individual customer and has that much confidence in their product that they willingly stand behind it and defend it, that's a company I will buy from again and again. My parents taught me growing up to value quality over quantity, and to reject Walmart-syndrome (buying lots of cheap junk that is worthless just to say you have it). EBL took really good care of me and I am happy to report dozens of batteries charged over the past few days.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2017Before buying this Smart Battery Charger for C / D / 9V / AA / AAA Rechargeable Battery Ni-MH Ni, take a little time to look for options and analyze the opinions of customers who had purchased it. I noticed that I had a 70% positive opinion and that is why I decided to buy this Smart Battery Charger, which also has 2 USB Port for Phones & Discharge Function. The charger arrived at the time indicated and came in a safe box for transportation. The instructions are very clear, the discharge of the batteries is done between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the load that remains and for the load is needed from 4 to 12 hours, according to the brand of battery and capacity that goes from the 1100 mAh in AAA, 2800 mAh in AA, 5000 mAh in C or 10,000 mAh in D. You certainly receive a quality product for the money you pay. I am going to use them for a couple of months and I can do an update of my analysis
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2018At this price point it is an excellent charger that works. Wish it had a numeric status instead of BARs because who can tell if those bars are their standards or actually mean the battery is full. Meanwhile with numbers you can definitely see if the batteries are working right. Having said that, for those that dont care up to what level their battery charged and dont care to lookup if their batteries are degrading, well for those than then this charger is for you. Just pop in those rechargeable batteries while the device is unplugged, close the lid, plug in and good to go. I never noticed any heat coming from this device, the literature does mention of safety mechanisms against fire so thats a good thing and seems to work. But of course I never leave the device and go out of home, shouldnt do this with ANY charger. Super easy to use, why not give this item a try
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020I had a problem with my previous charger. After contacting EBL, they sent me a new charger at no cost. The new replacement generally works without any problems, though once it a while I do still have a rechargeable battery that thinks its alkaline. Most of the problems with the previous charger have gone away, so if you're having problems, I would recommend contacting EBL-- they certainly stand by their product!
Original review below:
I've had this charger for a few years now. It does charge batteries, so that's good. But it's not reliable. My major problem is that sometimes it recognizes rechargeable batteries as "alkaline". When this happens, it won't charge ANY battery. So you come back a day later, and none of your batteries are charged. Also, charging of C batteries makes those batteries HOT. This is especially the case if you've left the batteries in for a long time. I don't really want to babysit battery charging, and for how "advanced" this charger looks, I'd have expected some better thermal protection and reliability . Often times you will get different reads of charges if you take the battery out and put it back in, or if you switch between charging/discharging. Maybe it's charged? Maybe it's not charged? Maybe I should wait a few hours? It's on the last bar and the last bar is flashing -- look, it's still flashing, 8 hours later. This said, I have used it to charge a number of my batteries. Those batteries tend to run out of juice quickly. About one quarter of my batteries have gone "alkaline" and never been recovered. And before you blame the batteries -- every one of those batteries has been an EBL battery. I'd gladly pay more for more reliable batteries and battery chargers.
