    A Superb SSD From WD
    This little WD SSD My Passport is a marvel. In size, it is slightly bigger than a credit card (I have posted a photos with a Credit Card). It will fit easily into a shirt or jacket pocket and is therefore very easy to carry around. In speed it performs very well. Installation was a breeze. I was prepared to format the SSD just before use; I did not need to. It was literally plug and play. The device does get slightly warm in use, but only a little warmer than any HDD. Unlike some reports, it did not burn my desk or any other material. I could carry it around as I would any normal external Drive after use. Registration for the 5 year warranty was also easy on the WD website. It was done in under 5 minutes. WD immediately sent me a confirmation of the registration, and also a separate email linking me with their support site for 5 years. This was excellent service from WD. The only shortcoming is the length of the cable that comes with it. The cable is only about 3.5 inches long and does not allow for the SSD to sit on the table, when connected to an iMac. I will need to buy a 1ft cable to have it properly seated on my desk. I would highly recommend this small gem of a SSD. ETA: After my initial trial, I decided to format the SSD using Disk Utility on my iMac, and then check the speed of the Disk. There was remarkable improvement. I am attaching a screenshot of the results of my speed test.

      I have bought many of these and they are very reliable and solid. Only one problem. I ordered the blue one but I got a silver/grey one so it might be a challenge to get the colour that you order because even though the colour is shown on the front of the actual item it is not designated on the box itself. Someone applies a sticker to show what the colour is and of course if they put the wrong sticker on you might not get the colour you were expecting!

      I got the 1TB model and I can't believe how small these are getting, I could seriously see losing this if you're not careful, it's not much bigger than a credit card (I got the red one for this reason). In fact, it is so small and light that the included USB-C to USB-C cable is actually way too stiff for the drive and the drive ends up bouncing around in the air off the end of the cable! (Note to Western Digital: may want to include a more flexible cable with the drive so this doesn't happen.) I use this for holding large game apps and it works fantastic, have noticed no problems due to speed, etc. Would definitely buy again.

      Before I begin this review, let me take the time to note that if you're ordering flash drives, SD cards or SSDs online, be sure to run a capacity test on the drive you receive. Many drives for sale are counterfit drives that lie about their capacity. There's a handy little Windows tool called H2TestW.

      This drive arrived very quickly and was well packaged. I'm still shocked just how tiny this thing is; I know NVME drives (which this is interally) are small, but this is still shocking, it's around 1.5 inches wide, a few inches tall and super thin. The casing feels ridgid and sterdy with no flexing at all. It comes with a very short but still great quallity USB-C cable and a USB-A adapter. Straight away my PC recognized the drive with no issues. Western Digital included some encryption software for Windows and Mac on the drive, but sense I'm not storing anything sensative on here I just removed it. A test with H2TestW confirmed the drive is legitimate and is the advertised capacity. The read and write speeds were insainely fast and responsive, way faster than my mechanical USB hard disk.

      TLDR: Very compact and fast drive great for any usecase. I've always loved Western Digitals products, and this is yet another one.

      Only 3.6 TB.
      I took it out of the box and ran a quick format to get rid of the junk tracking software and It only showed 3.6 TB. A bit disappointing because I had about that exact amount to backup. I started it to copy my first batch of files measuring 1.8 TB and it returned a completion time of 21 hours. Probably more the fault of the older spinner source drive than this drive. Will up date the review when I get it full -- and it will be 90% full.

      Update: Finished file transfer in 28 hours. Took extra time because it had problems with some files and hung waiting for me to "try again or skip". Not sure why the trouble; the files were not corrupted on the original drive. Still researching why I had to skip several files.

      I hope writing this will prevent other Mac users from wasting gobs of time like I did. This drive is usable if you reformat. (Applications---Utilities---Disk Utility)

      I purchased this 4TB Passport SSD drive twice. I first purchased in 2022 to use as my work drive for my new Mac Studio because when ordering ordering from Apple, EACH terabyte of hard drive space costs hundreds of dollars. I work on huge Photoshop files, so I needed a large, fast drive to work. I reformatted the drive and it has been a workhorse for me.

      Recently, to sunset my MacPro (which has 4 internal drives and 4 external drives), I purchased a second Passport SSD drive. I estimated the space needed to be about 3.2TB. I didn't bother reformatting because I was just going to use the drive for access directly from my Mac Studio, instead of moving files over the network all the time. As I was copying, I noticed the files were taking up way too much space on the drive. For example, 750GB of files were taking up over 3TB of space.

      I searched for answers and found several instances of the same problem from PC users and the advice was always to contact tech support. Apparently it had something to do with sector sizes with the exFAT file system. So I decided to scrap everything I copied over so far, which was quite a bit, and reformat the drive as 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' which is a choice in the Disk Utility app. Now my files are taking up the correct amount of space on the 4TB drive. Problem solved, but not without wasting an entire weekend.

      Also, after reformatting, when the drive mounted, I was asked if I wanted to use the drive for Time Machine. So Mac users, you would have to reformat for that, too.
