Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert GCO1CN combination explosive gas and carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. It also detects natural gas, methane gas, and propane gas. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet or mounting it above an outlet and plugging in the higher line cord. Its easy-to-read large digital display gives you a clear readout of current hazard and levels. A peak level button alerts you to the highest level of explosive gas or carbon monoxide detected. The alarm includes a battery back-up giving you peace of mind in a power outage. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and alarms if carbon monoxide or explosive gas levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the 9-volt battery (included). - Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024This is a good work horse of a carbon monoxide detector. It lasted five years and told us every time someone in the kitchen had accidentally bumped it to the gas stove and turned the gas on. It has a battery and requires an AC electrical outlet, highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025The packaging states that a 9 V battery is included. The packaging (clear plastic bubble) was cut open just slightly where the battery would’ve been and the battery was missing. Otherwise, the product works as intended. I use this in conjunction with another device for comparison. So at this time, my only issue was that the product was received without the included battery.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2024These detectors seem to work well. I've just never had a problem with this model unit. Previous units of this type have alerted when gas (propane in my case) was present. Can't attest to CO2, but I feel they likely will detect other gases as the manufacturer states. They've simply been detectors I've relied on and have never had a problem with First Alert GC series detectors. I have them in several locations and again, depend on these units...

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024I picked this detector because it covered all the bases for various gasses and has an outboard power supply. This let me mount it in an ideal location then pass the wire through the wall to an outlet in a closet for a clean install. I can't speak to actual functionality since I hope it never goes off, but I've had no false alarms.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2023Bought two of these units. Trusted the name: First Alert. Did not want to buy an off brand with a safety product.
That said, with the burner of my stove in the kitchen on low, I blew the flame out and let the gas continue to flow, turning it to high. The first alert gas detector unit was installed about 5 feet away from the stove near the ceiling.
Natural gas rises because it's lighter than air, so you want to install your detector up above the source of gas. I stood there with the gas leaking close to five minutes... at this point I'm nearly choking on the smell of gas and I'm sure if I lit a match, the entire kitchen would've blown up.
I'm not sure how much of a gas leak you'd have to have for this thing to go off, but I wasn't about to let myself blow up to find out!
For most smoke detectors, all you have to do is light a match near it and they go off... every time we cook we have to pull the battery on the smoke detector... it's a Kidd by the way, and it works very well.
I did test the 2nd unit, holding it directly over the flow of gas, and after about three or four minutes, it went off… seriously?!?
I have to say I'm very disappointed in this first alert unit, and I really don't feel comfortable trusting my life to it.
I'm going to buy a different brand and see how that goes… If it works better than this unit, then I'll write a follow up review.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025We have the alarm in our basement; I trust First Alert.
