SLEEP STUDY

User-tested sleep technology

In a Bose-sponsored sleep study by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and the UCHealth CARE Innovation Center, Bose sleep technology was clinically proven to help users fall asleep faster. The study also found that all participants believed noise was blocked effectively, like snoring and traffic. In addition, when surveyed, 8 out of 10 participants reported improved overall sleep quality and 76% felt it was easier to stay asleep and all believed noise was blocked effectively.

    Buckle up!! Long review
I've been using thse sleep buds every night for almost a year and now I can't sleep without them. I originally purchases these because my room backed up to a fairly busy road and the noise of cars going by kept me up all night and would wake me up if a large truck drove by. They work perfectly for that. I currently live with my boyfriend and he snores, probably at a medium volume, and they also work for that. I personally don't keep my volume loud enough to drown out all of his snoring, but it makes it manageable to where I can sleep. I could turn the volume up to completely drown out the noise if I needed to. (The app has an indicator to tell you where you might not be able to hear noises like fire alarms. It will let the buds play fairly loud, but it will tell you that you may not be able to hear outside noises you'd want to hear above a certain point. I've included a screenshot to further clarify)The case the sleep buds store in is also their charging case. A full charge will last about 4-5 nights of use, longer of they're not used daily. I've traveled with them and did not need to charge them. There are little indicator dots to show remaining battery life on the front inside of the case. When you connect the buds to your phone, it will display the battery life of the buds as well. The case uses a USB-C to charge. That's the same for my phone, so it's very convenient to charge my phone at night and charge the sleep buds' case during the day, but iPhone users will have to find outlet space for one more cable, just as a heads up.So these are not ear buds that play any music you want. They connect via Bluetooth and via the bose sleep app to your phone. You're phone is more of a remote for the sleep buds. You go to the app where you can sample their prefabricated white noise sounds, pick a few that you want stored on the actual ear buds, it uploads them to the ear buds, and then you can scroll through the app to play what sound you want that night/day. The purpose for all this is to ensure that the white noise and your first alarm will play if your phone dies. (You can have multiple alarms go off, but if your phone dies in the night, only the earliest one will sound) I'd recommend downloading the Bose sleep app before purchasing the sleep buds to sample the white noise selection if you were curious about what to expect. They do stay in your ears fairly well. They come with a small, medium, and large silicone sleve to fit most outer ears. I'm a side sleeper, and they sit flush in my ear and are comfortable against a pillow. I'm a very rough sleeper and toss and turn ALOT in the night. At first, the ear buds did fall out while sleeping and I had to search for them, but they were usually around my shoulder or under the pillow. Sometimes they'd be on the floor or further down in my sheets, but I think I was inserting them incorrectly because now they rarely fall out, almost never. But again, I sleep rough so don't be discouraged.I'd recommend this to anyone who has a partner who snores, or for a partner who sets an unholy amount of alarms in the morning (they can use the sleep buds and have all their alarms sound while not disturbing you). I also recommend for anyone whose a light sleeper and is disturbed by noise. And you don't have to use them at night, I use mine while reading books or when my room mates are being loud as well. I know they're kind of expensive but they've really helped me sleep better and longer so I think they're worth the splurge. My ONLY complaint, and it's a small one, is the color. They're very lovely, but they're off-white. When they do fall out of my ears and I'm looking for them in the middle of the night with my phone flashlight, they can be hard to find. My sheets and pillowcases are white though. I wish they had some reflective paint on them or were a bight color. Again, not a super big deal. I've never lost one, just a personal experience.

I purchased the original Sleepbuds when they came out to try to help me deal with my wife's snoring which can be horrible. She says mine is bad too but I don't hear that so it doesn't keep me awake. :)

The original Sleepbuds were great. They were tiny, battery life was all night and then some unlike my Airpods, and they are pretty comfortable. Like the Airpods, it was pretty easy to forget they are in after a minute or two.

Unfortunately, the original Sleepbuds also had a major problem. After a couple months, the batteries started acting wonky. They would charge, then one wouldn't charge, they often had trouble connecting. It turns out that the new battery technology they used wasn't working out. Bose recalled the whole batch and refunded the money of those that purchased them, in full. I was happy to get the money back but very sad to lose the Sleepbuds.

In the time since, I've used my Airpods on the really bad nights but I can't lay on my side and the battery life isn't enough to get through the night. They even make an annoying sound that wakes you up right before the battery dies. Then I purchased a set of Jabra 75t that promised 7 hours of battery life (not quite, more like 5 hours). They were a little better at blocking noise but at the end of the battery life they screamed "Low Battery. Low Battery" at me. While the Airpods were comfortable (but not very good at blocking sound), the Jabras were not as comfortable, sometimes causing me ear pain where they rubbed.

Some nights I would use the Jabras and when they died I would switch to the Airpods. Not ideal.

I've looked at some of the other options out there but none of them appealed to me. That's why I'm so happy the Sleepbuds are back.

Bose has changed to good old, reliable NiMh battery technology. I'm not sure why they didn't go Li-Ion but I'm sure they had reasons. The new Sleepbuds II actually seem smaller than the originals but maybe that's because I'm used to the much larger (though still pretty small) Jabra earbuds. They don't stick out of my ears at all so laying on my side is no problem.

I've only used them one night but assuming they have the battery problem worked out, it will be so great to have them back. I slept for 8 hours last night and the battery charge still showed at 40%. They are very comfortable. I find the selection of sounds more than adequate. I just need a noise masking sound. I like the Brown Static since it helps block the low sounds of snoring better than some of the more "bright" sounds.

These are really expensive. And the charging case is too big. I'm not sure why it can't be Airpod or Jabra case sized. That would make them easier to travel with.

But they work, at least for me. Let's just hope we don't have battery problems again...

UPDATE: Two+ months in. I'm still loving these. I'm sleeping SO good. I use them every night and in the 2+ months I have had them, the right one has fallen out twice, probably because I didn't get it put in quite right. A few nights ago I had some pain in the right ear, probably because I didn't get it put in quite right :). Most of the time, once they get settled in after a few minutes, I can't even feel them, even when laying on my side.

I'm still using the Warm Static sound and it works about 99% of the time to keep me from hearing any sounds from the other side of the bed. If I do hear it, I bump the volume up a touch and it goes away.

So, I'm definitely still happy. There does seem to be a bug either in the software or iOS where allowing phone calls to make it through to the buds doesn't stay turned on. If I get it working one night then it doesn't work the next night. I'm not sure who's fault that is, Bose or Apple.

I definitely recommend them if you are a light sleeper that can't tolerate any noises in your sleeping environment.

    UPDATE: 1 year in
Darn it. The left bud has stopped connecting to the app. I was thinking that they were two years old and these things do have limited recharge cycles. So I checked and no, they are only a year old. After slogging through the Bose support site and trying everything I was finally able to get to the place where they will replace them under warranty. That's nice but they are saying UP TO FOUR WEEKS to get the replacements.

How the heck am I supposed to get any sleep for the next four weeks without these things? Hopefully it doesn't take that long.

I'm still loving these things. They work very well for me. I hope this new set lasts more than a year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my OCD brain

I waited a couple weeks before i gave a review. So here it is:

    Reason for buying:
I have had trouble sleeping due to my OCD. Nothing to do with street noise or any of that sort. It’s because I focused so heavily on negative things and my brain wouldn’t shut off.

    The Fit/feeling:
I thought I would have trouble with the fit because I’m a stomach sleeper. The first couple nights it took some getting used to, not because of discomfort but because I’ve never slept with earplugs or anything in the past. Once I got over that. I barely notice them.

    The sound clips:
I haven’t tried many of them as there are a few I really like that seem to work every time. “Showers” being my favourite. It takes my overactive brain to a happy place, creates a calm environment that seem to melt the worry and stress of the day away in just a few minutes.

I tried the “synthesized” sounds like deep organ meditation music but the sounds just loop. And being a musician I kept anticipating a change in chords, but they don’t happen. I wasn’t a fan, but those trying to block out noise might like them perhaps?

Battery life: battery life seems good. I have them on continuous throughout the night and they lasted two nights of 6 hours of sleep without charging. I now have them plugged in every day next to my bed so I’m not really concerned.

Overall: the price had me wondering if I was nuts to spend this kind of money on something that doesn’t play my music. But I was so desperate to find a cure for my sleeplessness I figured I would give it a go. After the first couple nights I thought they weren’t worth it. They weren’t that effective but I think it was because it was so different.

After a couple weeks, I couldn’t be happier. I fall asleep faster, I get quality sleep and my dreams have become so vivid it’s almost a treat going to sleep wondering what kind of messed up dream I’m about to have. No nightmares but they trigger something because I don’t remember having dreams like this before, and I almost never remember dreams at all. That is probably the one drawback- my dreams were so freaky at first I woke up several times the first few days.

Conclusion: if you have OCD or trouble with your thoughts like I do, these may be the solution. Although I went back and forth wondering if I should return them, I’m so glad I didn’t. They have literally changed my life.
