    When available at a 5 series price as this has been often, this odd duck of a model is the best bargain amongst the Norelco line. It is 9 series performance without any of the electronics and the high price, just a good shaver with an on and off switch. Like the Norelco shavers used to be. Glad I found it before the old Spectra totally died.

    It could have come with a cover for the blades. One has to carry the popup trimmer and charger separately from the case and the charge time is not as great as the old lines but good as it gets relative to the current lines.

    This review compares the Philips Norelco AT830/41 Shaver 4500 with the Series 9000 that I just bought. The main reason I bought this 9000 series shaver was that the 4500 rotary heads would fall out when cleaning. They are held in by and small plastic turn screw which I would dislodge causing the rotary heads to fall out. The 4500 was a good razor but did not cut as close as the series 9000.
    The series 9000 has a one piece head which contains all the 3 rotary cutters, held in place by stainless steel twist rings . Washing is really easy by just popping off the head and running under water. I can get both the razor body and the cutting heads cleaner, faster. The 9000 cuts quite close, nearly as close as a blade. I always use shaving cream (Gillette). I will buy this one again. Be careful that some Norelco's are really expensive with lots of gadgets that boost the price. The one thing that I haven't used with the 9000 is the side burn cutter. It seems to be awkward to use. Also the replacement rotary cutters will be a bit more expensive with the 9000; so a little trade-off

    Having owned many electric shavers over the years from brands such as Remington, Braun, Panasonic, and others, the Norelco 9000 series is my favorite to date. It is quiet, comfortable, easy to clean, and has excellent battery life. Shaving quality is good and it appears to be very well-engineered.

    Minor quibbles would be the inconvenience of having a snap-on trimmer, and the lack of a blade guard, which I ended up purchasing separately (this seemed an odd exclusion for a higher-end shaver).

    Overall, I am very happy with purchase and would definitely recommend or purchase again.

    This is the last straw with Philips. Their razors are a scam. They used to be good, but that is no longer true.

    The first Philips I ever got, 15 years ago, was $30 and worked like a charm for 10 years. I got a new one that was $40, worked about the same, but had a ridiculous battery life of < 30 minutes (compared to 3 hours for the old one).

    So that 2nd Philips started falling apart and I got this one. For over 3 times the price of my previous two, it's a complete scam and a joke. It doesn't shave any better. You have to clean it out (take it apart) EVERY TIME you shave, otherwise it will just cut you up and mess up your skin. The whole "run it under the sink to clean it" concept is a joke and a scam. That does absolutely nothing (how could it? where would the hair even go?)

    The on/off button is super inconvenient and I keep accidentally turning it off when I'm shaving. The razor is cumbersome to take apart and I doubt it will last long.

    Battery life is better, but that's it. Everything else is terrible. I will never buy Philips again.

    0/10, you don't always get what you pay for. Never again!

    UPDATE: After being cut up by this awful razor, I bought a Panasonic, which shaves a thick beard in 10 minutes. Then I just use a cheap $20 rotary razor (Remington) to get any missing spots. I threw this Norelco in the garbage. It is truly awful, and was starting to make weird noises.

    I have shaved with Norelco for over 30 years, and been very satisfied.
    That said - When the new shave arrived in a sealed box, inside a second sealed box in a sealed mailing box, I discovered that the "Clip-on Precision Trimmer", which was shown in the advertisement, on the product box and on the box contents . . . WAS NOT IN THE BOX.

    i called the "800" number in the instructions, provided the model #, Serial # and Item description, and was told that this model does not have a precision clip-on trimmer, Which it should have according to the instructions included in the package.

    After over 30 minutes on the phone, I was promised the Clip-on Precision Trimmer was being sent, (from the Netherlands?) and would be here in 3 - 7 days . . . We'll see.
