Product Description

Meet Sammy. This cute little peanut butter and jelly sandwich is actually a robot that teaches coding principles and skills to children in grades K-2. You don’t need a tablet, smartphone, or computer to program this robot; programs are created by simply laying down a sequence of physical code cards. As the robot drives over the code cards, an OID optical scanner on the bottom of the robot reads the code cards one by one and loads the program. Next, place the robot on a grid made of map cards, and the robot runs the program. You can program the robot to move in different directions, activate its output gear, light up its LED, play sounds, and respond to different function cards. The integrated output gear makes it possible to build simple robotic creations with arms or other moving parts that respond according to the program’s instructions. This robot kit also teaches physical engineering and problem solving skills through a series of building and coding lessons. The 30 lessons are aligned with standards for computer science education developed by the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the International Society for Technology (ISTE) Education, as well as courses from Code.org. The lessons progress in complexity through the illustrated manual, allowing the kit to be appropriate for a child as young as four years with help from an adult and as old as eight years. The lessons cover these six key areas in coding: sequencing, loops, events, conditionals, functions, and variables. In addition to Sammy, there are five other stories, each with a series of model-building and coding challenges and lessons related to it: a mouse moves through a maze to find cheese; a penguin wanders around a zoo; a soccer player moves a ball into the goal; a fire truck puts out a fire; and a factory robot performs tasks in a factory scene. A full-color illustrated manual guides users through the coding lessons and the assembly of the different models.

How Does It Work?

Build

Build Sammy (and other models!)

Follow the step-by-step visual instructions to construct a variety of models that appear throughout the storybook-style manual. In addition to Sammy, there are five other stories, each with a series of model-building and coding challenges and lessons related to it: a mouse moves through a maze to find cheese, a penguin interacts with other animals in a park, a soccer player moves a ball into the goal, a fire truck puts out fires, and a factory robot performs tasks in a factory scenario. All models use the same robotic base unit.

Program

Write a program using cards (no device required!)

Each code card represents a different function or chunk of code that tells the robot what to do: move forward, turn left, play a sound, etc. You write a program by laying down a sequence of these code cards and having your robot drive over them one by one. While it does this, the OID sensor on the bottom of the robotic base unit scans a small pattern of dots that you can barely see printed on the cards. The robot records the sequence as a program.

Run the Program

Watch your robot run the program!

Once the robot has stored the program, you'll place it on a grid made of map cards that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and the robot will run the program you created! The optical scanner reads the map cards so the robot can always orient itself and interact with other objects and machines you build. There are 38 different map cards included, allowing you to run more complex programs once you get the hang of it!

KF Coding

Bonus Math Mode

A special math mode offers simple lessons in number comparisons, addition, variables, and algorithms for hands-on math explorations. Just switch the robotic base unit to math mode and program your robot in the same way as before, this time with the goal of solving specific math problems.

There are two types of cards: the programming cards and the course layout cards. I found it helpful to separate the programming cards into several ziplock bags by general function.

The course layout cards are the big ones and have different things on each side. So when you are putting together a layout, you have to hunt through both sides of about 20 cards. That’s fine for the older kids but the little ones get distracted. My solution is to number each card with an A or B for the side. Then I went through every layout in the book and wrote the Card number/letter on the diagram. Now instead of having to shuffle through all the cards I just look for the number.

We haven’t worn out the cards yet but we will. I wish the company made more robust cards using wood or plastic.

First of all, I took a bit of a leap on this one because we had mixed results with another kit from the same company (the candy claw machine). It was VERY complex and it ended up my wife and I had to do the bulk of the construction. I worried this would be similarly challenging, bit it is PERFECT for younger kids (I'd say < 8 but even a 10 year old would probably have a blast). And once the physical construction is done that's where the real fun begins. The kit comes with two different types of cards that fit together like jigsaw pieces: programming cards and map cards. You use the former to "program" the bot and the latter to let it "execute" that program from its memory. It's worth mentioning I've had a number of false starts getting my kids (7 and 5) into the basics of coding. Typically the teaching tools I've found are either non-intuitive to a kid, or if they are the principles they impart are often non-transferable. If the lessons gleaned are entirely internal to the game or tool, what good is that? Within 20 minutes of beginning to lay out their programs, my kids were immediately learning highly transferable lessons about syntax, object orientation, debugging, trimming sequences to make them shorter without sacrificing functionality, etc. And all without the need for a complicated tablet app or any such thing. Everything you need comes with the kit. The construction feels hardy enough to withstand even the most brutish kids and the whole thing has the feel of a toy to them. Both of my kids are on Scratch almost every day (haven't quite made the leap to Python with my oldest), but I dare say this kit more efficiently taught them the most foundational and transferable principles of coding of any tool I've seen yet. Don't be scared of the price tag. Many dozens of lessons and experiments will keep the insights running for quite a while. This thing is worth every penny!

My sense is if your kid is in Grade 4+, you can probably just skip straight to a real language. There will be struggles, but they may as well learn a real language at that point. The insights about syntax and debugging and such will just come from experience. But for younger kids this is the best tool I've ever seen for teaching the foundations of coding, bar none.

I hardly ever leave a review. This product made me leave one, though. We bought this product 2 years ago. At that time, my kid was 7 years old. He tried constructing the plastic pieces, code and map cards. Even with my help, he could not understand the 'code' card concepts. I let the toy sit for a year. Now during this summer (2022) holidays, I helped him kickstart the first project. He immediately latched on to it, built all the projects in the manual. He finished all the projects in under a month. He loved the coding concepts like - If condition, loops, sub-routines etc. This is an amazing toy for a kid approximately 8 yrs. old, may be even younger. One con with the product is that the 'code cards' (Item no 53) do *not* fit into the 'code card frames' (Item no 54) properly. As a result, code cards falls through the frames. Sometimes the 'Robotic base unit' (Item no 44) fails to scan the code cards. Other than the minor flaw, this is an amazing product.

My little one loves this so much. It’s so simple and easy to figure out and there’s so many different combinations of courses to make for the robot and different forms the robot can take. The actual coding part is so simple (shown in the video) and it’s super easy for kids so they can be introduced to coding. Heck my husband and I played with it for a bit too! 10/10 so fun!

I originally wrote a 5-star review on this kit because my six-year-old son and I were having so much fun with it. But the very next time we went to use it, the cards were unable to stick together and we couldn't make even simple programs work. 90% of this set is amazing, but the map and programming cards, which are the most important pieces, are cheaply made and become slightly bent with even gentle use, making the whole set useless. We haven't even made it through the whole book of experiments yet. I'll be emailing customer service about this.
