A bit pricey but worth it IMO
    4 Stars
A bit pricey but worth it IMO
There is a lot to cover with this radio. It used to be Grundig until Eton took it over and been making it in China ever since. I wanted something to replace an old Grundig YB400PE of mine that was battery-powered, covers all of the ham radio SSB bands, and has external antenna connections. I also didn't need anything small and portable either but wanted a desktop unit. Ham radio companies like Icom and Alinco had been making high-quality receivers in the past with advanced features. However, those are almost impossible to find. This radio fit what I was looking for. It's powered by four D batteries that sip power, so it will last a while under constant use. I use mine every day to listen to the ham bands and receive ARRL's morse code and digital bulletins. I wanted something that was battery-powered to receive those in case of a power outage. And because, being in West Texas panhandle, we are joining ERCOT in June that's pretty much a guarantee at this point. How do I receive morse code and digital modes? I connect the radio to my computer and use FLDigi to decode it.Usually, I'll have a pro section then a con section in my reviews then go into my final thoughts. However, because this radio has many features, I'll separate my review into sections highlighting each feature with the pros and cons of each.Battery: The four D batties are plenty for this radio that, in my opinion, really sips power. This means these batteries will last a while in this radio. Which is great for when the power goes out.External connections: I like the external connections of this radio. There are two BNC connections for FM and Shortwave respectively. Then two-wire connections for an AM long wire. Red for the verticle antenna and black for the ground connection. This is a major plus as the short telescopic antenna will do decently, it is not made to pick up ham radio SSB where the major of the traffic is located. Thereby having an external antenna to pick up ham chatter and modes is a necessity. The major con here is how close the two BNC connectors are to each other. If you want to use both at the same time, then only BNC connectors will fit. You can't have two BNC adapters connected at the same time. So, for example, if you have a verticle antenna that you want to use for both Ham/shortwave and FM, then you have to go this route: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H4TTZTL/?coliid=IDIO9GGUNCK0V&colid=3KR8YFQESFJIW&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it One BNC female that splits into two BNC males. I will cover reception quality in another section.Telescopic Antenna: It comes with one, but not the tallest. Does a decent job, but not the best. Does a decent job on picking up FM, but again not the best. Not really used for any ham band listening on SSB (Single Sideband). It does a good job at picking up commercial AM Shortwave, but an external antenna is really better for this radio.AM/Longwave Antenna: The rotatable AM/Longwave Antenna fully rotates 360 degrees without stopping. This is great for this desktop radio, so you don't have to twist the radio itself, just the antenna. There is an option to plug in a 1/8" plug into this antenna for a long wire AM/Longwave which is a very nice plus to this antenna.Speaker, Volume, Bass, and Treble Controls: The speaker in this unit is loud enough even for my hard hearing ears. The volume comes up to a level for easy listening even for me with the knob at about 1/3. And while this radio has Bass and Treble controls, they don't make much of a difference, in my opinion. So, while the volume and speaker put out enough sound for a small crowd the meager Bass and Treble is a disappointment.Earphone Jack: The jack itself works just fine, however, I had to use a lot of force at first to get the headphone into it. So much force that I thought I broke it at first. Very sturdy.Keypad area: I really enjoy the numbered keypad so I can enter in an exact frequency and go to it, instead of using the tuning knob and fast and slow step controls like in other radios. This is where you enter frequencies, memory, Upper or Lower Sideband or AM, FM or Shortwave, Etc. The buttons feel solid and so far have worked just fine.RF Gain, Squelch, and Clarifier knobs: I usually just keep the RF Gain on auto as the unit does a good job at signal gain. I don't mess with the squelch control at all as I want to listen to the raw signal to pick up very weak signals. Turning up the squelch will cut off weak signals. The Clarifier is used to trim an SSB to hear voice clearer and I use it very frequently and works just fine.Signal Meter: Nice addition that I've only found on this radio that is on nearly all Ham radios. What I haven't used: Haven't used any memory, or the timer or sleep buttons at all though I have no doubt about whether they work or not.Unit Codes: Read the manual for this. This unit has unit codes. Codes are used to tell the radio to use 9K or 10K AM steps. A code will also tell the unit if you are using alkaline or rechargeable batteries which I found interesting.Reception: FM reception is decent enough but sometimes won't pick up weak FM. The Ant. Att. button is used to Attenuate whatever antenna the unit is using. For local FM on mine, it's best to have the Att. at halfway or low. AM reception is decent, both day and night listening. This unit picks up nighttime AM very well, so it's a decent DXer. For shortwave (and especially ham listening) use an external antenna for best reception. This is what I use the radio for the most and I have a simple roof dipole antenna. The reception on shortwave/ham band listening with an external antenna is very good. Almost as good as an HF ham radio. Almost because this radio does not have any audio processing. There are no noise-canceling or noise blanking features like on ham radios. It just picks up the raw signal with all interference. That's another con with this radio. It's very sensitive to RFI interference from TV's, power lines, computers, etc. So, it's best to turn off all you can while listening to anything AM whether it's local, shortwave, longwave, or ham band listening to decrease the amount of noise this unit receives. Even with all those off, I still use an external audio filter from MFJ Enterprises to help with static and RFI noise. It does pick up air channels, but I haven't used that feature in extended use, so I can't speak of reception on that other than it does pick up those frequencies. The same goes for Longwave.Overall: Overall, this is the best bang for your buck radio. It picks up almost anything you might want to listen to if you are a casual listener, DX listener, or ham band, listener. For best results, I would recommend some type of audio DSP filter for this radio. MFJ-748B is what I use (see picture) for ham band listening. It's a solid portable battery-powered radio that can be your companion at the house, on the beach, or ham radio listening during an emergency.1-26-'22 Update: This is a nine-month update regarding the Eton Elite 750. I still use this radio regularly to listen to ham radio and W1AW digital bulletins and I'm still quite happy with the radio.Battery: The unit still sips battery power. For example, I accidentally left the radio on all night and it only used a third of the nearly full battery power. That's almost 12 hrs.Reception: I really wish that Eton would put in some DSP noise filtering but you can't have everything. With an external antenna, it does really well on shortwave commercial and ham radio. Especially is that external antenna has some type of noise filtering on it as well. But let me still stress that this radio is extremely susceptible to interference from computer monitors, flat screen tv's, power bricks, computers, etc. I had to use some ferrite beads and ferrite cores on my computer cables to cut back on the noise this radio receives. And let me say that this radio is the best so far for AM local broadcast. It even beats out the EP Pro from CCrane. I've got the EP Pro from CCrane and this radio is more sensitive. In order for the CCrane EP Pro to receive nighttime AM radio just as well as this one, I have to use the Tecsun AN200 AM Antenna with it. This radio receives AM Broadcast so well that the Tecsun AN200 does little to improve the reception even on weak stations. However, as good as the AM side of the radio is, the FM side of the CCrane EP Pro is better than the Eton 750 simply because you can change the angle of the telescopic antenna on the CCrane EP Pro. However, if you put up an external FM antenna on the Eton 750 will greatly improve FM reception.I will say that anyone who buys this radio will not be disappointed, especially if they put up some kind of external antenna. The sun is going through a phase where it helps with AM reception whether it is AM broadcast, AM shortwave, or ham radio, so listening will get even better as the next few years progress. If you can't put up an external antenna, then you can get a long length of speaker wire and clip that onto the telescopic antenna and run it around the ceiling inside your house and that will improve reception through the internal telescopic antenna. That is what I used to pick up the local airport chatter on the air frequencies (mine is 120.5Mhz).So, there's my update and I'll say again that I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase. I just wish it was still made in America but sadly it's not.7-22-2022 Update: It's sad that I have to put in this update. One year and three months later, the unit is starting to fail. I don't know what the issue is exactly, but I noticed that there was no sound coming from the unit suddenly. From about 21Mhz and up when the BW was on narrow there was no sound. Totally dead. Now, it's spreading to both Wide and Narrow and below 21Mhz. The air frequencies were also cutting out as well. Everything looked fine on the screen, there was just no sound. So far, FM is fine, but I can't count on that. Basically, because of this problem, it's a dead unit.Again, it's sad that I have to put in this update that a little over a year and the unit is starting to fail completely. Eton, the China company, is nothing like the Grundig, the original company. I used to have a Grundig YB400PE that still worked after years of abuse and taking that thing apart numerous times and only failed because battery acid got to the main board. That old Grundig radio was built with quality in mind. The Eton company from China, obviously does not care about the quality of their products like Grundig used to. This is a sad day for me that only after a year and three months it's $400 down the drain.

    Update 3/28/2022
I have had some months to use this now, an still give it 5 starts. A few key fidings:

    1. You may read that this has poor battery life. Not true, so long as you turn off the display when not in use. There is a setting for that, and if left one at full brightness, the batteries do get drained. So just be sure to set the display at the default setting (reamins on for about 10 seconds, and then shuts down).

    2. For new SW users, timinjg is everything. I pick up Asian stations in the morning, 900 to noon. I pick up ham operators in the early evening. Stations simply have their own unique schedule, like a New Zealand station (11725), awesome station, I usually get this very late at night (Mountain Time USA), weekends, but it comes in really clear, with music, politics, great stuff.

    3. On YouTube, search for "how to save statiions on eton elite executive" and there's a great how-to video there by a fellow, he does a really nice job of explaining and showing how to save your various stations and frequencies (all bands). Also how to label your pages. One you do it a few times, it's really easy.

    4. Finally, I called Eton once with a question about the line-in. They got back to me, they called me back, it's still a weird feature IMHO as I list below, but what I did learn is that Eton is pronouced "ee-tahn" (emphais on the second syllable).

So after some months of use, I enjoy the radio more with time, woth every penny.

    Original review
Briefly, this is a great radio. I don't have much experience with short wave radios as points of comparison, but here are my experiences with this radio after almost a month, in no particular order:

    1. I love the leather cover, I never take it off, look at the product pictures, it serves as a stand. It covers the face of the radio when not in use. Very functional.
    2. Audio quality is outstanding, the audio output. The speaker is very small, limited range obviously, but I have connected good headphones and multiple speaker systems and the sound is just terrific for music. I have listened to a wide variety, classical, jazz, great highs, a solid bottom end. You can use either the headphone or the audio out jack for audio output, I use the latter, very similar to a standard FM tuner.
    3. The audio-in feature battles me, it is only one channel, and I see no use for it. A mystery.
    4. The instructions are not well written, but the information is there, it just takes a couple of times through. But this could be improved.
    5. People complain it is a complicated radio to operate. I see that more as a reflection of its rich features; there is plenty to learn.
    6. I get a gazillion AM stations.; I get a good number of FM stations (I do not live in a large metropolitan area) with good reception.
    7. I am exploring the shortwave bands, I have picked up radio New Zealand, North Korea, China I think, many Spanish-speaking stations, and lots and lots of bible folks. Little in the way of European or African stations thus far. I now better understand why short-wave listening is a bit of an art, as reception varies a lot based on time and atmospheric conditions.
    8. SSB was a bit of a mystery, but it works great while listening to ham radio operators.
    9. Aircraft band is fun; I live about 60 miles north of Salt Lake City and pick up the local airport as well as the Salt Lake Center and aircraft with whom it interacts.
    10. Great battery life, and the built-in battery charger is great and easy to use.
    11. Finally, IMHO, this is a nice-looking and well-constructed radio, well designed in appearance, features, controls. It amazes me how the screen adapts to sunlight and shows up in a blue screen. Very cool.

All in all, totally pleased. A lot of attention to details and features. I always like have a radio available especially for emergencies, but this radio I used almost daily at this point. This radio has a great pedigree.

I bought this radio while drunk-shopping on Amazon. The next morning when I got the "it has shipped" alert, it was my intention to send it back as the last thing I need is yet another radio but, since the seller shouldn't be held hostage to my whims and irresponsibility, I opened the radio to give it a fair try-out to make a proper decision. I'm glad I did as it's a really good one and I will be keeping it. I paid $80+$5 'tax'.

I'll be comparing this to my Tecsun PL-880 as that is considered a very good receiver and has served me well, although at nearly twice the cost. MW (AM) and SW are pretty much neck-and-neck in reception with the Eton, maybe, having the slightest advantage over the PL-880. Obviously, the Eton does not have SSB and the PL-880 does. That's okay. I have other radios (Alinco SR8T, PL-880, GE 7-2990A) that cover that spectrum should I choose to venture off into the side band world which is mostly just boring old guys rattling on incessantly about their radio equipment and complaining about new Ham's. The Eton has a wide band/narrow band switch and with the bass and treble controls, you can really dial in the sound for your ears which is great for someone with tinnitus and deafness at 8 kHz (wear ear plugs, kids). I'm near Dallas/Ft. Worth and we have one of the largest markets in the world so there is no shortage of stations, close or far, to try and search for. Unfortunately, my physical location and the radiant barrier in my house causes SW to be hit-or-miss but, still, the few stations I can get came in as well as possible using the stock aerial. I haven't tried it with a long wire yet although I did connect it to my outside GMRS base antenna got a few of the closer SW stations in a bit clearer so the antenna connection does work.

FM reception is fantastic with this radio, easily surpassing the PL-880. In scan, the PL-880 has a tendency to stop on dead-air stations which the Eaton filters out. I didn't even extend the aerial, just raised it into position, and it was pulling in stations very well. Connected to my external GMRS antenna about 18' in the air outside my house caused the Eton radio to pull in crazy amounts of FM stations. It's quite the FM DX'er.

The bluetooth connection on the Eton is quite nice. Presently I have my iPhone paired streaming a station. No problems, it hooked right up and sounds great. It only receives, not transmits.

The instructions on the Eton were just fine and easy to read. About 10 minutes of unpacking, and scanning the little manual and I felt like I was a pro with this radio.

It runs on 4 D batteries so with moderate volume control and reduced bass response, they should last for a very long time. I don't have a time frame on this one, yet, but in my GE which uses the same 4D setup, the batteries went bad before they went dead, probably about 8 years. Of course, when not in use I do not store alkaline's in any equipment, leaving them in a container beside my radio which was fortunate since they started leaking. I, typically, don't like digital displays as they trickle-drain batteries but this Eton seems to be okay, completely blacking out the screen when not in use - as long as you flip the 'display off' switch on the side - although you can still faintly see the time and battery meter. Time will tell how long a set of batteries last. It would be nice to be able to charge a set of rechargeable batteries though the radio if plugged in with the wart but not so with this radio. The PL-880 uses a single 18650 battery recharged though the side with a 5v wart or battery back.

The tuning on this radio is a bit clunky and annoying. The knob does not have a recess for your finger allowing you to be able to spin without your finger slipping off when using fine tune and the fast tune is just meh. It some sort of geared mechanism but not very smooth and can be a little jerky. It appears the best way to tune this radio is by using the up/down arrows (hold for 1 second and let go). Also, it doesn't have a continuous scan, stopping on every station and forcing you press the arrow again to start a new scan. The PL-880 has a 5 second hold on the scan and moves to the next station.

This radio has 10 presets per selection. Really? 10 presets? There is also no auto search (which why would there be with just 10 presets?) so if you take it to a new area, you can't automatically scan the waves and load the stations in that area.

I really like this radio as it feels good in the hand and it sounds fantastic. An included protective case would be nice although I see the one for this radio is here on Amazon for an additional $40+. I do recommend this radio, highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Portable Radio I've Owned
Reviewed in Canada on February 19, 2021
    Style: Elite ExecutiveVerified Purchase
I have a lot of experience with portable shortwave receivers, and the Eton Elite Executive is the best I’ve ever owned. Here are my pros and cons:

    PROS
    • Sensitivity in SSB (single side band) is similar to desktop general coverage receivers. The ability to change bandwidth is an advanced feature that can help in improving the intelligibility of SSB signals, and works well. Frequency stability (important for SSB) is very good. See CONS below for a note about entering SSB.
    • Shortwave broadcast sensitivity and sound quality is excellent. Bandwidth adjustment helps reduce the effects of adjacent channel interference and/or noise. Bands can be accessed quickly by the “F” buttons, or you can let the radio scan and automatically stop at a strong signal.
    • Medium Wave (AM broadcast) sensitivity is also excellent. Again, the ability to change bandwidth helps with adjacent channel interference.
    • Long Wave is not used much in North America, so I have no comments on it at this time.
    • The FM band includes RDS (Radio Data System) similar to that found in modern car radios. This identifies the station and the music playing and scrolls it in the display. While this radio only has one speaker, the stereo sound on headphones is very clean and full.
    • The aircraft band is surprisingly good. Portables I’ve owned in the past that include this band were terribly insensitive. The sensitivity of the Elite is as good or better than that of my ham radio VHF/UHF transceiver which also receives the aircraft band. Bandwidth filtering is also available on this band.
    • Squelch (to silence noise when no signal is present) is also included, and works on all bands. This is particularly nice when listening to communications (SSB or aircraft) that tend to be intermittent. It also serves as a ‘mute’ on FM to silence the radio hiss between stations when tuning the FM band.
    • 700 memory locations in 100 pages of 7 each to store favourite frequencies. Pages can be labelled (eg. AIR BAND, FM1, FM2...)
    • Line In/Out jack to play an mp3 player through the radio’s speaker or to record off the radio, respectively.
    • For someone who is interested in getting into short wave listening or aircraft monitoring for the first time, save some money and buy one of these radios instead of a more expensive desktop receiver. Performance is on par, although it may not have all the features found in a desktop.

    CONS
    • While the leather cover is nice, it’s only practical for protecting the front, top and back of the radio while travelling. I would have preferred a more practical soft lined pouch.
    • The manual is misleading on how to enter the SSB mode. It states that you have to quick press the SYNC/SSB/RDS button twice, but all this does is put the radio into SYNC mode. SYNC is the worst feature of the radio and is poorly implemented. It’s meant to help with minimizing the effects of fading broadcast signals, but is terribly distorted. Ignore this instruction (and avoid using SYNC for listening to broadcasts!) and simply quick press the U/LSB button above it to enter SSB. You can then toggle between upper and lower sideband with this same button.
    • After just a couple of weeks of gently swivelling the telescoping antenna about, it has become quite loose where it enters the radio, causing the antenna to wobble as you move the radio.
    • I sent Eton Customer Service a note about the antenna wobble and several days later, not even an acknowledgement of my issue. This may be an indicator of what to expect if warranty issues ever come up.
    • For setting the clock, avoid using RDS AUTO. Set it manually. If you use RDS Auto, the radio reads the RDS data from local stations (if they are transmitting this data) and automatically sets the radio’s clock. Depending on whether the station you are tuned to has properly set their time, you may find that going from one station to another will result in your clock time changing. This is the fault of the radio stations and not a fault of the radio.

Overall, this radio is an excellent buy, particularly when the price is reduced on Amazon. It’s also generally cheaper than its competitors (TECSUN, SANGEAN) for radios with similar performance/features.
