When I first moved in to my apartment, I bought one of those cheap, tall laundry baskets supported by flimsy metal rods. Within a few months, the rods were poking through the bag and my once proud basket stood crumpled in a corner. After a year and a half, sewing it back together, and taping it when thread didn't work, I gave up. It was time to buy a new hamper to go in a very narrow place.
I had a few requirements: 1) that it carry a full week's load of laundry. 2) that it stand on its own. 3) that it not be supported by flimsy metal rods. 4) that it fit in the maybe 9 inch gap between my dresser and the wall (the fun of small studio living).
Because of requirement 3, most hampers meeting requirement 4 were eliminated. That brought me to this beauty.
Size: While slightly smaller than its predecessor in my life, it still carries a full week's load of laundry for a single woman. If I'm doing anything extra, I have to carry the item, but I was already carrying my sheets anyway so this wasn't a big deal.
Carrying: The straps are long enough to sling over one shoulder and carry against my back like an overly large purse. I have not tried converting it to a backpack because I simply don't have the need. For a few minute elevator ride to the floor with the laundry room and short walk to the actual room, I can handle having it on one shoulder.
Durability: Since it is slightly smaller than I am used to, I stuff it tightly. Despite this, it does not show any signs of stress at the seams. Additionally, due to my "tight space" requirement, it gets manipulated into a narrower configuration during the week. Again, not an issue.
Stand-up-ability: It does not stand as straight as those hampers with the metal rods (when the rods aren't broken). However, it has been a month and still stands reasonably well. If you are looking for a true hamper that stands on its own, maybe get a plastic or wicker one. For me, ease of transportation was much more important than standing stick straight, and it stands plenty tall. I also haven't noticed it drooping more than when I initially purchased it.
Amazon Warehouse: I purchased this item "used" from Amazon Warehouse. It apparently has some minor cosmetic imperfections somewhere on the item. I wanted to disclose this to the extent that these imperfections (which I cannot for the life of me locate) may impact any outcomes of my review.
